The Perfect Cage for Your Cockatiel

There are a number of items you will need to purchase in order to have a cockatiel as a pet. The most key items to consider are obviously bird cages. The cage will be your most expensive purchase, and remember that money spent is money saved; the higher the quality - the longer the longer it will last.

Your cage will need to be large enough for two perches, and wide enough for your cockatiel to broaden its wings without being impeded by the sides of the cage. It must be square, and wide to provide a large floor area for the bird to walk. A general smallest size is an 18 inch square base, and 24 inch height. A cage that offers a wire bottom will allow droppings and left over food to fall into a cleaning tray to help keep the cleanliness of the care

Once you have decided on a suitable cage for your cockatiel, start to think about the available extras to keep your cockatiel occupied and prevent it from becoming bored. There are a few essential items that you need to buy, and the following items are considered a must.

The cage will need to have two perches, ideally at split heights. There should be enough head room for the bird to sit without having to lower its head. The bird can then hop between the two perches.

Strategically locate the food dish and water dispenser in the cage. Many can be mounted on the side of the cage and comfortable to retrieve and cleanse. Several cockatiels possess an inclination for various food locations and can experience discomfort from eating off the floor. Offering a floor tray that possesses hanging millet sprays is an excellent choice.

Putting paper in the cage may aid in cleanliness, although it must to be changed every day. There is a large variety of cleaning aids for cages.

You can keep your cockatiel amused by offering toys. Occasionally new toys may frighten cockatiels so you should leave it on the outside of the cage until the bird has adapted to it.

If you play with the toy in front of the cage, this assists to display how to use the toy, and will gain the bird's attention. They will observe that the toy can be fun and interesting.

Cockatiels typically imitate human behavior, so introducing the toy will intrigue the cockatiel and make it want to do the same thing you are doing. You should try to change the toys for your cockatiel. This will avoid it from getting bored and keep it intrigued by new introductions. - 32194
